Mangrove Kingdom

The boy stole charts the way other children stole candy: not for the sugar, for the map of where the sugar lived. His name was Cal. He was twelve, which in Tampa is old enough to run a skiff and too young to be believed about anything important.

The island was on three charts and missing from four. Johny said that meant it was real. Islands that appear on every chart are just real estate. Islands that argue with paper are still becoming themselves.

They left at gray light with sandwiches and a lie for Cal's aunt. The mangrove wall looked like a country that had not decided on a capital. Inside it, the water went the color of strong tea and the sky got smaller, as skies do when the trees start voting.
